CA Intermediate - Overview

The CA Intermediate (CA Inter) is the second stage in the Chartered Accountancy course offered by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). It consists of two groups, each having three subjects, making a total of six subjects.

About the CA Intermediate Course!

After clearing CA Foundation, students become eligible to register for the ICAI CA Intermediate course. This stage serves as the first major step toward developing an in-depth understanding of Finance, Accounting, Law, Taxation, Auditing, and Management.

Why is CA Intermediate Important?

  • It builds a strong conceptual base for higher-level CA studies.

  • Introduces practical aspects of Finance and Accounting.

  • Enhances analytical and problem-solving skills required for the CA Final and real-world applications.

    CA intermediate Syllabus & Subjects

    CA Inter course has a total of 6 Subjects which are categorized into two groups (GROUP I and GROUP 2) of three subjects each.

    CA Intermediate - Group I

    Paper 1: Advanced Accounting (100 Marks)

    📌 Focus: Accounting Standards, Company Accounts, and Special Transactions.

    Module 1:
    Basic concepts of Accounting Standards (AS) and their applicability.

    Module 2:
    Classification of AS based on assets, liabilities, revenue, and other key elements in financial statements.

    Module 3:
    Company Accounts, including Buyback, Amalgamation, Reconstruction, and Branch Accounting (including foreign branches).

    Paper 2: Corporate and Other Laws (100 Marks)

    📌 Focus: Company Law & Other Business Laws .

    Module 1:
    Covers Company Formation, Prospectus, Share Capital, Deposits, and Charges.

    Module 2:
    Covers Management, Dividend, Audit, Accounts, and Foreign Companies..

    Module 3:

  • Part 1:
  • LLP Act, 2008

  • Part 2:
  • Other Laws (40 Marks) – FEMA 1999, General Clauses Act, and Interpretation of Statutes.

    Paper 3: Taxation (100 Marks)

    📌 Focus: Income Tax (50 Marks) + GST (50 Marks)

    Section A: Income Tax Law (50 Marks)

    Module 1:
    Basics – Residential Status, Exempt Income, Heads of Income.

    Module 2:
    Income Clubbing, Set-off & Carry Forward, Deductions, and TDS/TCS

    Module 3:
    Computation & Optimization of Tax Liability.

    Section A: Goods & Services Tax (50 Marks)

    Module 1:
    Core GST concepts – Supply, Charge, Exemptions, Time & Value of Supply..

    Module 2:
    Income ITC, Registration, Invoices, E-Way Bill, Payment of Tax, TDS/TCS & Returns.

    CA Intermediate - Group II

    Paper 4: Cost and Management Accounting (100 Marks)

    📌 Focus: Costing Techniques, Budgeting, and Decision-Making.

  • Covers: Costing principles, cost control, standard costing, marginal costing, and budgeting.
  • Paper 5: Auditing & Ethics (100 Marks)

    📌 Focus: Audit Principles, Procedures, and Ethics.

    Module 1:

  • Introduction to Strategic Management
  • External & Internal Strategic Analysis
  • Strategic Choices, Implementation & Evaluation
  • CA Intermediate Course - Eligibility
    Candidates can register for the CA Intermediate Course through the following two routes:

    1. CA Foundation Route

    Candidates must have qualified the CA Foundation Examination conducted by ICAI.

    A minimum of 50% aggregate marks in CA Foundation is required.

    2. Direct Entry Route

    Candidates meeting any of the following criteria can directly register for CA Intermediate without appearing for CA Foundation:

    ✅ Graduates/Postgraduates

    Commerce Graduates/Postgraduates with at least 55% marks. Non-Commerce Graduates/Postgraduates with at least 60% marks.

    ✅ Other Professional Qualifications

    Candidates who have passed the Intermediate level exam of: Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) After registration, students must complete an 8-month study period before appearing for exams.
